Lumen Is Ending Phone System Sales. Is Your Office Contract Affected?

Here’s something a lot of Southern California business owners haven’t heard about yet. Lumen Technologies — the telecom company many of us still think of as CenturyLink — has stopped selling and renewing business phone services. Effective August 1, 2026, Lumen no longer writes new contracts for business voice: no new SIP trunking, no new Voice Complete, no new hosted voice lines.

If your office phone system runs on Lumen, here’s the part that matters. The service still works today. But there is no renewal path. When your current contract reaches its term, there is no Lumen voice product to renew into. Lumen has called this end of sale rather than end of life — which is honest in the near term, but it changes the math on every Lumen voice contract anyway. Your contract term just became your planning deadline, whether or not Lumen sets a formal discontinuation date.

Why this matters for your office phones

Business phone systems don’t migrate themselves. If your phones came from a carrier like Lumen, renewing meant staying with the same provider. That option is gone. When your term ends, you either find someone else to run your phones or you deal with it in a hurry. Neither is a good way to make a business decision.

And this wasn’t ever only a Lumen thing. Carriers across the industry are stepping back from running voice to focus on selling network and connectivity — that’s where their growth is. The bigger point: if your phone system is tied to a large carrier, at some point it may be beached by the carrier’s strategy, not by anything you did.

What to do now (simpler than it sounds)

• Check your term date. Find out when your voice contract renews or expires. That’s your planning window.
• Port your numbers. Your business phone number is yours to keep and can move to a new provider without your clients noticing.
• Move to a cloud phone system. A hosted phone system (VoIP/UCaaS) runs your lines in the cloud — no on-premise hardware, extensions that work from anywhere, easy to scale across locations.
